This is a beautiful painting of a Monterey cypress tree with an Acorn Woodpecker perched on the side of the tree. The trunk of the tree is very intricately painted with a lot of detail. The background is a light brown color and the tree is in similar shades of brown. The woodpecker is small and is black, white and cream with red on its head. There are no leaves on the tree and it is a section of the tree and not the entire tree.

Barbara Banthien, 'Acorn Woodpecker on Monterey Cypress' an original acrylic painting on board that has a black, wood frame and measures 21 inches by 17 inches.

Acorn woodpeckers are a medium-sized woodpecker with a length of around 20cm and an average weight of 85 grams.  They are found across Central America, as well as north into the western U.S. and south into parts of Colombia.  They have straight, spike-like bills and stiff, wedge-shaped tails used for support as they cling to tree trunks.  Best known for their habit of hoarding acorns - they drill small holes in a dead snag, then harvest acorns in fall and store them in these holes, to be eaten later.  A tree may be used for generations and may be riddled with up to 50,000 holes!
